Ugaga and Yala Chairmanship Race: Will It Be a Mirage Again?

The aspiration of people of Ugaga to govern the Council since its creation has always been a failed dream.

But undeterred, they have continue to file out to persuade on their other brothers to allow them have a shot at the number one council seat.

Will that jinx be broken this time or will it continue to be a mirage? I Egbara Emmanuel will  examine the issues in this piece.

Contestants for the Chairmanship race in Yala local government have continued to intensify their campaigns ahead of primaries slated to hold soon.

At the moment, they seem to have taken their campaigns to the doorsteps of the power houses who would decide their fates on the battlefield.

There are over 5 contestants for the cherished and plum Chairmanship seat of the Council. The roll call include, Sunny Omagu, Goffio, Declan Ogar amongst others.

One paramount issue that has continued to agitate the minds of the Yala populace is zoning of the Chairmanship position.

This has generated a lot of discourse in the political atmosphere of the Council.

The Ugaga people are strongly laying claim that the seat should be zoned to them arguing that amongst the Yala wards, they have never had a shot at, it will not go down well politically  with the Ugaga people if this chance slip off their hands.

Since the creation of Yala Local government, Ugaga has suffered marginalization in piloting the affairs of the Council having to continually play the second fiddle.

The Ugaga people had to contend with this age long marginalization. All their efforts in the past to govern the Council have remained futile.

They have bore this burden like a camel laden with heavy load and unable to move. Their dream to rule the Council one day look glimmer and slimmer by the day. Other wards have continued to trample on them.

It could be recalled during the election bid of erstwhile council boss in 1999 the Ugaga almost came close to achieving their ambition.

The then Chairman had declared publicly that he would hand over to an Ugaga son at the end of his  term in office .

That declaration could be likened to that said by God to the Israelites when they were in bondage in Egypt that the Pharaohs they see today, they will see no more. But while the Israelites eventually got freedom after 40 years of captivity and slavery by the Egyptians, it was not the case with the Ugaga people.

The gentleman agreement was never kept as behind the scene politics of majority always having their way played out.

The way and manner Ugaga aspirant is consulting vigorously through the nooks and crannies of the Council expending huge finances and if deceived through assurances that he would be flag bearer of the PDP will really agonize the political system if betray by his own kinsmen.

Declan's campaign train is moving really fast and he is tipped to make a remarkable impression at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries next soon. Declan has exhibited loyalty and rare maturity. He has never been involved in a riff with any big wig.

His style of humility has indeed thrilled a lot of Yala people. The other contenders from that axis seem to be sleeping even as questions are been asked whether they are serious about the contest.

Perhaps, reasons could be adduced for the failure of the Ugaga people to govern the Council The Ugaga elites   who constitute decision making in the state seem not to have confidence in themselves.

As it stands, the aspiration of the Ugaga to govern Yala still hangs in the balance.

Would it end up a race to no finishing point?

I remain Egbara Emmanuel.

REVISITING THE PATH OF AN ACHIEVER: HON. GABE UGOR, THE JUDAS ISCARIOT OF THE NORTH

Due to the vicissitudes of this juncture as triggered by the force of 2019 political uncertainty in our nation, Nigeria, a lot of political particles have been energized for their ultimate interest which is not alien to our kind of politics. Those suffering from political apathy are being schooled via electoral education by civil society groups and political campaign organizations on how to exercise their franchise. While these ups and downs are taking place during this electioneering, politicians and their protégés are shifting camp and equally switching party. Of course, every cattle wants to graze in greener pasture. Penultimate weeks ago, the senator representing Cross River central senatorial district, Sen. John Owan Enoh declared his intention to contest in the gubernatorial race under the platform of the All Progressive Congress, APC. It shook the state's political platform to its base. Since his declaration, he has been navigating his voyages across the tumultuous ...

Obama: Unedited Farewell Speech in Chicago.

Here is an unedited transcript of President Obama’s prepared remarks during his farewell address in Chicago, as provided by the White House. --- It’s good to be home.  My fellow Americans, Michelle and I have been so touched by all the well-wishes we’ve received over the past few weeks.  But tonight it’s my turn to say thanks.  Whether we’ve seen eye-to-eye or rarely agreed at all, my conversations with you, the American people – in living rooms and schools; at farms and on factory floors; at diners and on distant outposts – are what have kept me honest, kept me inspired, and kept me going.  Every day, I learned from you.  You made me a better president, and you made me a better man. I first came to Chicago when I was in my early 20s, still trying to figure out who I was; still searching for a purpose to my life.  It was in neighborhoods not far from here where I began working with church groups in the shadows of closed steel mills.  It ...

MAKING YALA GREAT AGAIN

Fortnights ago, in one of my penultimate articles titled; YALA LGA POLITICS IN FOCUS: A CHRONICLE Of ITS POLITICAL TRAJECTORY, where I attempted to straighten a sloppy contour in Yala political delineation based on available statistics. I inaccurately wrote that Mr. Omaga Odo the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Cross River State chapter Secretary was from O’oh councilward; rather, he’s from Okpoma ward. Again, the write-up portrayed Gabu and Yache as unit ward. There’re actually autonomous wards of their own. Also, I mistakenly omitted Wanikade ward from the list of wards in constituency II. The error and omission are highly regrettable and no harm whatsoever conceived or intended. As June 17 approaches, a lot of political blitzes are ongoing— consultation, enlightenment campaign, permutation, and scheme and gimmick to woo the electorate and court the courtesy of some monopolistic politicians. Varied interests are building up in different directions. Some are in line with zoning par...

CHIBOKGIRLS: The Painful Memories by Ezekwsili

On that  30 th  April  2014 when diverse citizens gathered to march in solidarity, no one could have imagined that any out of our 219 Chibok Girls abducted from their secondary school in April 2014 would remain  in captivity  of terrorists 1000 days after the tragedy. One recalls  pictures of distressed parents  supported by local hunters foraging through the path they were told that the terrorists had hauled away their daughters. Meanwhile, their government was missing in action cynically indifferent to the cries for he lp. One of the parents said  he was desperate to find his daughter by walking off into Sambisa Forest before the Nigeria Army prevented  them, because the  future of the entire family depended on that daughter finishing school and taking c are of her siblings.  How can we not be moved by such decisiveness on girls education in a region that topped both then and now, the chart of poor school enrollmen...
