I doubt in my mind if there exists any policy in Ayade Government that is not open for criticisms especially by agents of the opposition. You will agree with me that the major factor militating against the progress and development of the Northern district of the State and indeed other adjunct Local Government Areas like Boki, Ikom, Etung Obubra etc. is the location of the State capital in far away Calabar. The proximity disavantage has always hindered the spread of development of these areas. The former Gov. Donald Duke brought carnival in Calabar, the State capital to turn around the economic fortunes of the Southern district of the state. Cross River State today celebrates the Biggest Street Party in Africa while the people of the Southern extraction of the State are direct beneficiaries. Apart from that, ex Gov. Duke extended the same entertainment acumen to the Central district of the State to popularise the traditional festival known as Leboku which hitherto was celebrated as New Yam festival by the people of Yakurr. Today Leboku has become a household name in Africa and beyond. Many young Men and women drive their cars and win fantastic prices courtesy of the festival. Ex Gov. Imoke added value to the existing structure and brought in sponsors to consolidate the policies. Why all these allegories? The just concluded NORTHFEST and its introduction as well as the controversy trailing the emergence amongst critics, I hold the view that If the policy is sustained then the unity of the Northern district of the State is straighened as opposed to the general perception that the North and its people are not united. This is just the starting point of the unification, politically, socially, culturally etc. The North through the instrumentality of NORTHFEST has created a platform where people from that extraction now come together to reason together in the interest of their Common good. Through NORTHFEST, for the very first time, the Northern politicians gather together to feast together without campaigns, without elections. It has provided a pathway through Which ideas are harmonised. Ideas that make things work for the people. Through NORTHFEST, intellectuals are dicovered. Youths with different artistic prowess who can add VALUE to the society are discovered. Those who availed themselves of various competitions are now proud owners of one property or the other. It is not economic waste to put money in the hands of those that worked for it. I disagree in its entirety the position of Inyali PETER that His Excellency the Governor Sen. Prof. Ayade delibrately Organised Nortfest in order to enable him retire money. The obvious implication of this FALLACY is that any idea that tends to be of VALUE to people devoid of frivolities always faces difficult beginning characterised by criticisms. we are in a democracy, every body is entitled to His opinion but the view should not be parallel to other peoples' sensibilities. The comments of Inyiali PETER were not fair in line with the SPIRIT of journalism reportage. I call on Hon. PETER Odey a member representing Ogoja State Constituency at the Cross River House of Assembly and other members in the North to sponsor a bill on the floor of the house establishing NORTHFEST. That is one of the ways by which development can gradually crawl to Cross River North. Let's support Government policies and programmes that are people-oriented. Policies that are geared towards touching people's lives positively. Paddy Buturo. (The Project)
