THE Alorye grassroots initiative (AGRI), a nongovernmental organization, set up by the wife of the Cross river State Commissioner for environment, Mrs. Eraye Alorye Andeshi has empowered 36 persons from the various parts of the state to enable them fend for themselves.
Mrs. Eraye's latest empowerment was facilitated with support from few good hearted Cross riverians.
The beneficiaries, who were trained in various fields, received equipment, which would enable them start up vocations in goods and service delivery, so that they could become self-employed and employers of labour in their various communities.
The 36 trained persons include youths from all the local government of the state who were trained in , tailoring, shoe making hair,Catering, bead ,soap making and confectionery.
Special Assistant to Governor Ayade on Youths and student matters Hon. Ogar Declan Genesis said during the empowerment ceremony in Calabar that since its inception, Alorye grassroots initiative had worked hard to achieve its objective of improving the lives of the most vulnerable in the state with support from well-meaning individuals and corporate organizations.
“From prison inmates to the mentally challenged; to widows and physically challenged persons, children and youths; to entire rural communities, no one is left out of the warm embracing arms of Alorye grassroots initiative as it continues to strive to give others the opportunity to make the best lives they possibly can through its various programs,” Declan said.
According to him, all AGRI projects and programmes covered the three senatorial zones and the communities in Cross river state and commended Hon. Barrister Alphonsus Ogar Eba for his financial and technical assistance to the organization.
In her speech, the National director Alorye grassroots initiative said the fact that the beneficiaries were youths reinforced a cardinal principle of the Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that stated that no one should be left behind.
One of the beneficiary, Mr Ebiale Augustine from yala congratulated her for her undying love for the youths of the state, " if we have three of such persons in the state while should we hobnobbing for job all around when the jobs are in our hands?" he questioned.
Other participants are calling on well-do crossriverians to support her to achieve this desire for the people of Cross River State.
She said that recent statistics seemed to suggest that inequality in the country had increased, regretting that many people, including youths, women, widows and physically challenged persons were excluded from growth process and the benefits thereof.
She said: “In Nigeria, we are faced with a major challenge of economic recession, which is worsening the situation of unemployment, especially for youths. The slide in the economic growth levels may also have adverse effects on households, livelihoods and poverty levels.”
Alorye expressed the commitment of AGRI to continue to partner with the government of Cross river State in key areas that would ensure attainment of the SDGs.
